The Dying Middle Class of Podcasting

Podcasting is starting to look a lot like the broader economy: the rich shows are getting richer, the low-effort content is exploding, and the middle—the average podcaster—is getting squeezed.
Podcasting is starting to look a lot like the broader economy. The top keeps getting bigger. The bottom keeps getting noisier. And the middle—the place where most independent creators used to live—is quietly getting squeezed.
A few years ago, being a solid, consistent, well-produced podcast was often enough. You didn't need celebrity guests. You didn't need a seven-person production team. You didn't need to top the charts.
The Two Extremes Are Thriving
On one end of the spectrum, we have the high-gloss, high-budget, celebrity-driven shows. On the opposite end, we're seeing a flood of low-effort content. AI-generated shows. Auto-read scripts. Poor audio.
The New Reality: Pick a Side
If you want to build a podcast that actually moves the needle today, the middle-of-the-road approach is risky. You essentially have two viable paths:
1. Be undeniably unique.
Do something no one else is doing. Fill a gap no one is filling. Lead your niche instead of blending into it.
2. Go all in on quality.
If your concept isn't wildly different, your execution has to be. Clear positioning. Excellent audio. Thoughtful editing.
